Last year, I dropped a Mole wrench down the inside of a timber frame interior wall while installing a mixer shower valve. I completely failed to locate it with mirrors and a torch so decided to go magnet fishing with a 30mm diameter neodymium Ebay magnet and some thin paracord.

I'm afraid to report that I didn't even get a tiny nibble. It was quite fun though.

By coincidence, about an hour ago a bloke I know posted a photo on his Facebook page of one of those old metal roadwork lamps which were lit up by a candle. A woman replied that her son pulled one out of the Leeds & Liverpool canal by doing some magnet fishing.

If you found modern phones which are waterproof you could charge them and find owners. That’s if the magnet doesn’t destroy or wipe the insides. I wouldn’t mind an old train lamp to be honest.

You'd need some strong equipment and a fair bit of strength to pull out most binned in canals, rivers etc metal items. Imagine trying to pull an old rusty steel framed bike out! I bet most things are tangled around underwater plant growth, so it'll take a lot of effort! I doubt a fishing rod, a reel and nylon fishing line, with a fair sized magnet on the end will do! 😉

Imagine pulling an old gun/pistol out of a canal or deep river! Would you keep it as a souvenir, or hand it into the police?! 🤔 You never know, it could be connected to some unsolved shooting, even murder, from years, if not decades ago!

I would ring the cops immediately - as you say - it could be the final piece needed to find a murderer

and the idea of having a gun around - even an old rusty one - is just scary
and if you got searched on the way home for some reason it would take a lot of explaining!!!

I have seen a lot of magnet fishing on the canal near here - initially a lot were doing it - they used a magnet inches or more across and some decent thickness of rope

it has tailed off now - I think they got all the old stuff out

but you do occasionally see a bit of rusty old metal on the grass verge - if it is not worth taking away they seem to leave it at the side and after a while it goes - no idea who takes it

As is the norm, our Accy's first attempt at magnet fishing went slightly awry...

On cycling alongside the Leeds & Liverpool canal about ten years ago I saw a totally rust attacked bike on the canal bank. Obviously it'd been fished out. It was so rusty and must've been in the canal for years! I just had to stop and pick it up to see how heavy it felt. Heck, it felt as heavy as a blacksmith's anvil!🙄 😬 😉
