Grenades quite regularly (seems to be a couple a year) get pulled out of the canal in Leicester.

I remember reading about someone finding a Sten gun while magnet fishing... yep here it is... not one but six!

I guess that would still apply if it was obviously so rusted as to be unusable? As it may in some cases be possible to clean up and repair them.

I've always wondered what would happen if you found something like that and were literally on the way to the cop shop to hand it in but got stopped for some other reason.

then you would probably be OK

But you might have a rather uncomfortable arrest
and a difficult interview at the station

Personally I would ring the cops first and offer to take it or wait until they arrive

It would make sense

criminals are not well know for their intelligence, in many cases
I have known several cops who have said that they would get nowhere if the culprit were not so dumb most of the time!

Ditto policemen, 2 examples

A friend was stopped on his motorcycle and whilst they were checking the bike over one said "Your back brake is ineffective" whilst deftly manipulating the clutch lever.
I was cycling past the clocktower in Leicester when a cop shouted at me "Oi no cycling get off and walk" he was actually stood under the signpost that gave the distances and directions of the cyclepaths (You know those blue signs with a little bike on them) to be fair he was a PCSO that time

Whilst in Canadian we sampled Steelhead rainbow trout, I wonder if they were caught with a magnet?
