Call the feds immediately as unlawful possession of a firearm or efen ammunition is almost guaranteed jail time regardless of the circumstances, and if you do anything other than report it or immediately travel to the cop shop to hand it in your possession of it will be unlawful. Waiting until Monday or doing it after you've done the shopping etc wont cut any ice with a court.

I tried magnet fishing on the Nene in Hamtun a while ago. I thought that a cut off section of the river at Barnes Meadow might produce summat as it was part of a Civil War battlefield.
No joy, though, but I wasn't able to commit a lot of time to it.
I might give it another go in the spring.

Did you ever read 'The Wasp Factory' by Iain Banks (a very 'dark' book) That was how he/she killed off a younger cousin by getting him to hit a mine that had washed ashore with a big stick.

I've always wanted to try it but never have. I think all the high traffic areas would only net me fishing tackle or disposable vapes. anywhere rural would probably be fruitless

Imagine pulling an old gun/pistol out of a canal or deep river! Would you keep it as a souvenir, or hand it into the police?! 🤔 You never know, it could be connected to some unsolved shooting, even murder, from years, if not decades ago!

A family has told of their shock after finding a large cache of guns while paddling in south London.

I watch mudlarking videos sometimes. Mudlarks are people who search the Thames (and possibly other rivers) foreshore for interesting stuff.

Handguns are a pretty regular find. They bag them up and take them to the nick.

I saw a couple of blokes doing it in Runcorn a few months ago

One of them had got something in some manner and both of them were trying to pull it in with little success

from what they were saying as I rode past they could feel it moving but it only came so far

they were trying pulling at different angles to try to dislodge it

I remember reading about someone finding a Sten gun while magnet fishing... yep here it is... not one but six!

I guess that would still apply if it was obviously so rusted as to be unusable? As it may in some cases be possible to clean up and repair them.

I've always wondered what would happen if you found something like that and were literally on the way to the cop shop to hand it in but got stopped for some other reason.

As far as the law goes once a firearm, always a firearm, until formally deactivated and certified as such.

That it is too knackered to fire is mitigation, not defence.

A friend was doing a house clearance and found a hand gun in the bottom of a draw.
He called 101 the non emergency police number.
Suddenly he had blue lights outside and the police told him he should have called 999 as it is classed as an emergency.
So I guess they do treat this stuff seriously.
