ive recently just cycled 50+ miles as i wanted to hit me half century before year was out. however im now questioning if i actually done this as i stopped after about 14 miles for a drink (2mins) then at half way i stooped at a cafe for 20mins then another stop on way back 2 mins. ended up doing just short of 52 miles. but im asking could i class this as a 50 miler or not on account i stopped????????????

If you unclipped, then no. Each time you clip in counts as a new ride.

As most folk said it doesn't matter how many stops you make as long as you do it in the same day. I wouldn't count a 25 miler one day then a 25miler the next as a 50 but the op's most certainly is a 50. You'll be looking forward to your metric and imperial tons next (62.1 miles and 100 miles)

Puzzle game procrastinator!
Long distance audax riders count their 600s as one ride even though it is usually over a Saturday and a Sunday with a kip somewhere in between, so I think you are certainly entitled to think of yours as one ride - congratulations!

Oh shoot! I'd better not start a 100 Midlands Mesh at 22:00.

It's not a race! Riding a bike is about seeing things you otherwise don't see. So if I see a rare bird (Feathered variety, honest guv'.) or hares boxing in a field I stop. If I were driving I'd miss these things.

Seriously - everybody I know counts the miles in a day (which is 24 hours if it includes an overnight).
Doing a 50, 100 is the achievement. Doing it faster the next time just keeps those achievements coming. Which is what it is all about.

Who actually cares?

Just ride how you like, for as long as you like, and stop where you like.

About the only unequivocal thing you can say is how many miles you have ridden in a given time interval.

If you actually want to start comparing yourself with other people then you need to ride with the people you're comparing yourself against..

What about those of us who don't use clipless pedals?

Not only are stops allowed, they are actually mandatory under the rules of both the the Cycling And Kayaking Event Society and Professional Uber-distance Bicycling Society.
