He's a nutter.
Why would you call somebody that? He has very informative site and seems a nice guy to me. The "nutter" as you describe him has done a hell of a lot more cycling and toured a lot more than most.
I think he's pretty brave, some of the places he's been. I quite like people that move outside the so called norm. I'd descibe him as eccentric if anything but there again I love eccentrics.
By the way I must also be a nutter as on my last tour I used the same tent and bubble wrap. Worked very well. Slept like a baby.

Bubble wrap for a sleeping mat! Apparently by the time the bubbles have all popped, you've got used to sleeping on the bare ground.

Probably true. My mattress got a puncture part way through my big tour and would deflat every night. I still slept fine.
 
Was a time not so many years ago, there was no blow up mattresses, or expanded foam, or bubble wrap, we just slept on the groundsheet of the tent, and put spare clothes under the points of the body which suffered the most. Back then a lightweight tent was 6KG,
