I was on holiday recently with a couple of people who turned out to be rabid foodies and cooks. Wonderful!. One lunchtime they made some mayonnaise which was delicious. I thought I would try it myself this evening having sought recipes on the internet but I am a bit disappointed. I used sunflower oil and the end product tasted...well .....of sunflower oil. There is much discussion about the best oil combinations . Some say 75% grapeseed oil and 25% extra virgin olive oil.

I'm willing to experiment. What would you good people recommend?

It really depends what mood im in but it has to have a nice mustard ( I cheat with the american style mustard so it's a softer flavour) and bit of lemon with a flavourless oil (or touch of organic virgin olive oil) I have experimented with coconut oil (don't heat just stir small amount into the other oils until it goes liquid)

Love Nigel Slater, Jamie Oliver does some nice ones but they are big flavours. If you're a foodie give me a follow, always like a fellow dabbler in the kitchen.

Culinary things I've tried, and decided 'life's too short' when it's generally good, and cheap, from local shops:

1) Making mayonnaise (I love mayo,though)
2) Making hummus

I just used whatever we had in- sunflower oil*. I suppose it should really be just olive oil since that's presumably all they had when someone first discovered how to make it?

[*three times... though I agree with Fnaar, it's easier to just buy it, but it was fun making it!]

I agree. I've also tried DIY satay peanut sauce, it was very nice but I ended up with about 5 gallons of the stuff, what a waste of time.
