Malta is like Marmite - you love it or hate it. We loved it. The old buses (which surely must have been replaced by now - we went about 17 years ago) were a scream. Cheap and air conditioned i.e. windows open along with doors too. Only one beach to speak of at Melia Bay (excuse spelling). Roads potholed to hell back then. Valetta is beautiful but beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. Busy as hell though. Wouldn't go in its summer months due to extreme heat. We went March time as well as November. I'd go again but don't have a passport any more and now happily holiday in the UK.

My wife has just come back from Jerez and liked there too. Not touristy in her opinion.

I would second this.
And the area, in general. Fly to Sevilla - another option, maybe? - car rental to Jerez (and those listed below). Great food and wine, of course.
Cadiz is a great town - possibly not to all tastes, again great food and drink.
Anywhere along the Costa del Luz.
Research required for access however, if she can get on and off a plane and into and out of a car, most places should be ok.

although we prefer shopping to old stones

what sort of shopping?!

She went to the Costa del Luz with my dad to a hotel I'd recommended and hated it 🤣

We have the assistance at the airport so that's much easier. Taxis can be a challenge but we manage.

Shopping, anything really (more my brother and sister in law, crafts, textiles, clothing)

I'm in the love it camp. Mostly because we made friends on our 2nd visit, one of whom I ended up being best man at his wedding. Some of my favourite gigs have been when I've played in Malta too. Great little place which I'd hope to go back to next year.

If going to Malta then Meliha bay is lovely. Lots of history. Perhaps another place to consider is Sorrento. Not too hot, lovely lemon groves to visit. Much Limoncello. We've also done Madeira which also has lots of history, and er Madeira Sherry obvs.

I've added Sardinia to the list based on a colleague's input 👍

We're going to Sardinia in about three weeks time, with Riviera.

Went to Malta a few years ago, but I don't think where we stayed meets your requirements (we were in the Paradise Bay hotel a few hundred yards from the ferry port to Gozo)

Thanks
Been to Sorrento (and I also plan to go with some friends next years).
Madeira a no no as parents had a timeshare so obvs been many times and would be too many memories (my dad passed away about 18 months ago). Flight too long as well (more like 4 hours and that's if don't get diverted as too windy to land!)

Depending on how many friends you have, I can recommend Villa Galidia wholeheartedly (4 bedroom villa). ^_^

I can't remember where we stayed in Malta other than it being on Meliha bay. I remember I enjoyed it as it has some lovely history and I walked up to the Red Tower. I can see it being difficult to get around with limited mobility though. It does say that their busses now have wheelchair ramps. You can also go on a nice day trip to Gozo.

Been to Malta several times, lived there with the RAF, but we always stay in Gozo about an hours drive from the airport and catch the ferry. The Gozo population just love the British. Photo is the Azure window now collapsed into the sea.
