It's a collision, not an accident. I emailed the BBC, wonder if that will have any effect?

At what POINT was it an ACCIDENT FFS??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some cretin diriving a ton of metal, looking no further than the end of their bonnet (otherwise they would have seen him??) mows down and kills someone??????

It was NOT an ACCIDENT. There was human input and error in the incident, how can that be an accident?

Isnt this why they are now called RTCs!

They are, but the Beeb (being almighty) still report them as accidents, despite police stating collision?

Just make me an editor for a day, just one day..........I'd make the reporter's lives hell.;)

Given the impending spending cuts at the Beeb, I can't see their standards improving anytime soon.xx(

It would be an accident if it were unintentional.

The problem is that stating something as an accident seems to make some people think that it absolves all responsibility and that there should be no recourse - which of course is nonsense.

Nasty, but I think you are being over sensitive and without any knowledge of the situation

Accident: "an undesirable or unfortunate happening that occurs unintentionally and usually results in harm, injury, damage, or loss; casualty; mishap: automobile accidents."

"any event that happens unexpectedly, without a deliberate plan or cause."

For all we know, the dead man might have indavertently stepped out into the carriageway? Soemone might have had a brake failure at that very moment? There is no evidence that the death was caused by "a cretin...looking no further than the end of their bonnet (otherwise they would have seen him??)"

If we want to pick holes in the English language, if the person who mowed him down had been looking one metre past the end of the bonnet, rather than no further than the end of it, would that have been ok?

I am not defending the likely event that a motorist was not paying full attention, but I certainly have worse things to get worked up about than the possible misuse of the word "accident"

It was because it caused a huge traffic jam....that's news..;)

Stupid to change a tyre on a motorway for this exact reason - stupid drivers not looking where they are going.

I thought you couldn’t do your own repairs on a motorway

You shouldn't.

Vehicle plays up, pull to hard shoulder, put hazard warning lights on, get out of vehicle on passenger side (unless LHD - then get out on the driver's side), climb over armco and make way to emergency phone (indicator posts show nearest phone). Most important, always watch the oncoming traffic, as they aren't responsible for looking out for you.

Of course it was an accident. No one in their right mind crouches down at the side of their car 3 inches from traffic doing 70mph.
I feel sorry for the person who hit him.

Horrific, last time I had a blow out in a van, hazzards on and the junction wasnt far so I carried on slowly and pulled off, found lay by and changed the (ruined) tyre there.

Never, ever attempt to repair a vehicle on the hard shoulder.

As has already been said, pull onto hard shoulder, hazards on, everyone out and as far away as possible from the carriageway. Phone AA / RAC.

It doesn't say what side of the car the dead man was working on

I changed a tyre once on the M11, in the dark, thankfully it was on the off side, that was scary enough, every hgv that went roaring past shook the car, motorways are very scary places to be if you;re not in a car doing 7-mph

This post displays a staggering lack of understanding. Just because someone has a driving license doesn't mean they can see for miles in the dark. Did you not notice that this incident happened at 3 o'clock in the morning on an unlit section of the M6? Changing an offside tyre in the dark on the hard shoulder - which I presume is what this chap was trying to do - is a pretty silly thing to do. I have more sympathy for the chap who hit him: anyone who's ever driven anything up that motorway knows it could easily have been them.

That doesn't make it right - still making assumptions just as wild, the killer driver would have had to be driving on the hard shoulder to hit someone changing a tyre.
