With them changing their story every 5 minutes, how can I be expected to post sweeping generalisations and assumptions if my information source is flawed?

By all means, no doubt the occupants will be on the grass verge awaiting recovery wrapped up warm in space blankets.

No where near the vehicle which is how it should be.

I never really understand that, when you go past a broken down car on the motorway and all the occupants are wrapped up in tinfoil. Do they wear this stuff every time they go outside, or is it just colder next to the motorway?;)

With everyone just driving past but having a good old gawp as they do, the passengers feel like they're being given the cold shoulder!

The hard shoulder of a motorway is a horrendously dangerous place to be. Your chance of being struck by vehicles wandering over the rumble strip is very high, even if you are well over towards the verge. Get over the barrier as soon as possible, and by the passenger door, as somebody mentioned. I was once waiting to get out by the drivers door when a large artic went by. The suction force trying to suck the door open was simply massive.

offside is passenger side surely? I'd proably be happy changing on that side if the car was completely on the hard shoulder with hazards on, what sort of driver strays onto the hard shoulder?

Offside is the driver's side. Even changing a passenger side wheel on the hard shoulder is fraught with danger, but changing a driver's side wheel ... you might as well write a suicide note before you start.

I think that the recovery services allocate six minutes to a roadside fix on the motorway and if it can't be done within that time the vehicle is recovered and attended to in a safer environment.

ah, never sure on that one, so all relative to the curb then?

still think the passenger side is alright under the cirumstances, you're suggesting that another vehicle is going to hit a stopped car on the hard shoulder with hazards on, doesn;t strike me as awfully likely

You'd think not but people regularly slam into the back of police cars and even fire engines that are stopped with lights aflashing.
