Manchester Commute Advice? Picadilly to Timber Wharf

Anything to watch for on this commute?

I may have to work in Manchester a few days a week for a few months and I REALY don't fancy the Glossop > Denton bottleneck in rush hour, so thinking of using the train

We have a display model folding bike at work that I could possibly use, and then sell off as second-hand after a few month's use, so that would make more sense. I don't know Manchester very well at all.

Any Manchester commuters know of any issues or places to avoid on one of these route options from cyclestreets?

Looks OK to me. Whitworth Street is fine - just watch the Oxford Road/St Junction. Harry Halls on your route in-case of bike malfunction !!

I do Whitworth Street every morning, sometimes it's quiet, others it's not as quiet, but hardly busy. As Fossyant says, keep an eye out approaching the Oxford Road junction, more than once a driver's switched lanes at the last minute without indicating, and the pedestrians can be a little unpredictable.

I do have one problem with the route though, and that's Auburn Street. It's a one way street, and not the way you're going when headed from Piccadilly. You could turn left on to London Road, cross the tram lines and then thread your way through from there, but probably the easiest way to avoid it would be to use the Fairfield Street exit from Piccadilly Station, get on to Fairfield street itself and that leads on to Whitworth Street. http://www.cyclestreets.net/journey/42278774/ (Quietest Route's the one I mean)

That's about the best route from Picadilly. The thing to avoid is Portland Street. Full of buses that don't look.

That's an understatement at the junction. Just wait till the students are back !

That cycle streets isn't bad - It's given me a decent route into Hulme from the South East of Manchester via the Trans pennine, and onto the Fallowfield Loop from the Reddish until Whalley Range, then up through Alexander Park. Will be good for icy weather.

Ah..you've obviously seen the model of folding bike I would be using then!
