Police have released footage from the helmet camera of a cyclist who was attacked by a motorist in Manchester.

The 33-year-old victim was cycling through Longsight when the driver of a black BMW grabbed him by the throat while shouting abuse.

The incident on 26 January was captured on the cyclist's headcam.

Greater Manchester Police said it was "as clear an example of road rage as you are likely to see".

The assault followed an altercation between the cyclist and the motorist on St John's Rd in Longsight at 1825 GMT on Wednesday 26 January.

After getting out of his vehicle, the driver assaulted the cyclist who was left shaken but uninjured.

His attacker then got back into the BMW, which was either a 3 or 5 series, and drove off.

'Right on road' Police said the man was white, about 50 years old, between 5ft 8in and 5ft 10in tall, medium build and have described him as having short brown hair but bald on top.

Pc Matt Dixon, of Greater Manchester Police, appealed for the driver, or anyone who knows him, to come forward.

"This is as clear an example of road rage as you are likely to see and we are working hard to identify the person responsible," he said.

"The victim has every right to be on the road and it is not acceptable that he has been targeted in this way.

Maybe now the fact that police are starting to use the footage from helmet cameras, this type of incident will decline.

After all if they think that they may have a camera pointing in their direction it may just get them thinking twice.

Video footage will only be used in extreme cases and if it is in the public interest to use. I'm writing a blog post about this atm.

Surely its in the publics interest to stamp out all bad driving!?

The cost implications of processing the video to be used in court and to actually make it evidence, witness reports have to match it etc.. That costs a lot of money to do.
So it's the public interest of sorting out bad behaviour / driving and cost implications.
