Well it was the correct location for my husbands surname and also for my family names! And I was surprised by how small the areas were!

I had a grandma with no data name too!

This is interesting: http://named.publicprofiler.org

It attempts to show where in the UK your surname is most common.

My fairly rare surname is apparently most common in North Devon and the middle of Scotland, which is a bit of a surprise, given that all my known relatives are from South Yorkshire and the East Midlands.

Your name's not Doone is it?

pretty good for my dad's surname (he came from the main area identified).
And for my mum's maiden name (although she was born in London, her family originated in Norfolk which is where the map showed the name).

Up in Teesside - formerly N Yorkshire - but I knew that already.

In Leeds for my paternal grandmother's surname - not unexpected since she was born there.

Only surprising location was my maternal great grandmother - on Tyneside rather than in Yorkshire.

Seems pretty accurate for my surname, Yorkshire and the north east - although there seems to be an enclave of us in the Southwest corner of Northern Ireland as well.

Maternal family sees accurate too, centred firmly on West Yorkshire.

Funnily enough, my wife's family name seems to be firmly focused in mid-Wales...which is news to us both!

When looking up my surname the other year i thought i'd look to see how many others in the world had it. There weren't many. In the whole of the USA i found only 13 and they were all in the southern states. Mrs Accy's maiden name however had about 500,000 in the USA. Pfft, how feckin' common!:headshake:
