Maps for touring in France.

As I seem to be crossing the border into France more often and going deeper into the country, I could do with some maps, as in proper paper maps, because I'm a Luddite. I'm mainly interested in the Alsace region, if that's a factor.

I know you're a luddite and you want paper, but take a look at www.geoportail.fr I think that will let you browse around and see what the different IGN series maps look like.

Next time you cross in France pop into the 1st hypermarche you see, they all stock IGN or the Michelin maps.

After going online to places suggested here, I found the Austrian company Kompass make maps of France to the same scale as the maps I use in Germany, which helps because it avoids confusion. I suspect this is a reproduction under licence of a French map with translation, which is helpful as sadly I don't speak French.

I'm not delighted with the format: the map comes as two smaller maps, both printed on both sides the Rhine valley is of course on the "back" of both maps because that's the way the world has to be, so there may be a fair amount of wrestling with paper. Still, at least I have something to help me navigate wherever I may need to go...

The site is in Dutch but don't worry about that. Press the Map Tool button and select France. Then just thrash around. I don't understand much Dutch but the people on the end of their phones speak perfect English and are very patient and helpful.
