The BBC has listed what it thinks to be the key marginal seats for the next general election. Fascinating though it is, I find the economic indicators used even more fascinating. Who would have guessed that the percentage of population claiming unemployment related benefits would be lower in Burnley than in Hastings and Rye when Burnley is widely regarded as one of the most deprived communities in England. Similarly the median annual gross income is higher in Burnley....

I know where I'd rather live though.

Have you been to Hastings recently, it's a dump.
Some of those former south coast holiday towns are really on their knees.
I was in Folkestone only on Monday and I was shoked at what I saw. Very high levels of deprivation.

Yeah Hastings seems to be two separate towns, a relatively affluent looking eastern side and then the rest which as you say is a bit of a dump. Rye and it's surroundings look nice though and with the price of housing there you would have thought incomes would be high to match

I can safely say it wouldn't be anywhere on the losing side of the Pennines!

Yeah, who would live in towns with their high streets filled with this view:

There are wealthy and deprived areas on both side of the Pennines. To think that one side is a "losing side"is naive and slightly offensive to the ones who you regard as losers!
I think he was referring to the War Of The Roses, more than anything else. I might be wrong of course.

What an unpleasant man! 'Regarded' by who, exactly? And you can keep your regional-centred, east-west nonsense to yourself, if you wouldn't mind.
Well obviously everyone apart from those who live in Colne who it appears aspire to live in Burnley. Well each to their own.
