One of my bikes is matt black, with red (edged in white) detailing. I don't like it. 1 minute with WD40 has it gloss black and it lasts for weeks.

[QUOTE 3000041, member: 9609"]Up until recently all colours apart from red where finished with a clear lacquer that prevented the paint fading. As far as I know they have overcome whatever problems there was with clear lacquer applied over red and modern day red cars will stay red.

My van clearly was an old fashion red.

Ah, the rat look.

For people that can't afford a full body respray.

or people who can't be bothered to polish, I've got some stainless bits on my car that started off shiny but can't be bothered to keep them shiny so had them sandblasted and sprayed them matt black = no more polishing! Its a pain for fingerprints and other marks though, show cars done in matt finish are possibly even harder to keep pristine than a more traditional glossy finish

It seems to be quite fashionable recently to have cars in NATO Green or olive drab, I think that's what the BMW in the op is going for but its a bit too green.

My bike is matt grey and red. I like the finish; it's quite water-repellent and easy to clean but if you get anything like car polish on it, it stains white in the same way as black bits on cars do.

Going by the wheels on it I wouldn't be surprised if it had an extremely highly tuned motor in it. Some of these "RAT" vans are capable of sub 12 second quarter mile runs (seen on Beetle rescue/crisis a few years back), they were getting 400+bhp out of them with a mahoosive turbo fitted. After all the engine was design by Porsche (senior) and the 356 was built on a Beetle floorpan and used the flat 4 engine as a starting point.
The engine can be bored and stroked up to 2.3 or 2.5 litre so power can be on par with an Imprezza or EVO mill.

My Golf estate can do 0-60, and that's with regular wheels.

While I'm not a fan of rat I admire the amount of money that's gone into a car as the rat bodywork look normally is a expensive wrap. Though some of the rat cars which have real rust are even more technically challenging to maintain without the car becoming rotten, they get double points for dedication.

Just imagine some scruffy hippyish surfer dude leaving most cars for dead away from traffic lights, ya boo sucks to the boy racers and their "hot" hatchbacks

I think you give them too much credit...I doubt most of the owners have given it that much thought and haven't actually worked out how they are going to maintain it!
