Does anybody know how to check for rim wear on a Mavic CXP 22 rim?

This is my front rim. My rear is something else and has a visible groove.

When I bought the bike, I really didn't know about things like this and honestly cannot remember if it had a groove or not, it certainly doesn't now. I get conflicting info on the web about whether these rims have a groove/a partly drilled hole that becomes visible or both.

The rim has done not far off 6000 miles and, whether right or wrong, I use my front break more than my rear, although as most rides are long and out of the city, I am not constantly on them. This has been through all seasons over the period of a year.

I have also attached a picture below.

Assuming they were originaly a pair they should have both had a groove. Older CXP22's with Red/yellow labels had grooves, later models did not. So it's hard to say!
Measuring with a micrometer is the only guide if there is no groove and I can't say what the minimum should be.
CXP22 are pretty tough heavy rims with quite a thick braking surface though.

Yes, you should be using your front brake the most.

I had wheels with these rims that I did 11,000 miles with before replacing. Honestly can't remember what they looked like when new, but going on my mileage, hopefully you will get a bit more out of them yet.

They have yellow labels with black Mavic writing, it's not visible in my photo though. Although it's only been ridden for a year, it was a 2013 model bike bought in 2014, so the rim could be from late 2012.

Unfortunately the original rear wheel was written off a long time ago, so the rear wheel I have now is a Mach 1 CFX rim, a totally different brand.

That looks like the wear groove in the old CXP 22's.

If the rim has worn down so that the groove is no longer visible then the rims have had it.

You can confirm the by putting a ruler edge on across the rim at 90 degrees.

You should see light through the gap - if you get some glossy paper from a magazine and can slide a corner through the gap then the rim is worn. If you fold the paper and can still slide the corner through then the rim is toast.

And if the whole magazine will go through then it's too late, you've already crashed.
