I don't like putting my heating up too high; I don't see the point in sitting there in winter in a t-shirt with the heating cranked up to the max!

Anyway, I have taken to wearing a dressing gown over my clothes around the house in winter, but what I would really love would be a proper old-fashioned Victorian style quilted men's housecoat.

Does anyone wear one or know where I could get one?

I think I'd call what you're referring to a smoking jacket. But googling suggests they are a bit more lightweight, and mostly sold as fancy dress.

I'm thinking of the sort of thing Badger would wear, paired with a Great Uncle Bulgaria pillbox hat?

I did have a couple of men's silk quilted Chinese dressing gowns that would seem to suit what you are looking for.
Unfortunately as soon as I no longer needed to keep the Christmas presents I moved them on to the charity shop.

What is it about wearing dressing gowns over outer wear? I know a few women who do this.
Surely the dressing gown is supposed to be soft, warm and absorbent for wearing over a naked body just out of the bath or shower or just out of bed?

Maybe it is just me but if I wore one over my clothes it would end up with dust and grease on the inside and I then couldn't wear it for it's intended purpose.

If I was cold indoors I would get my fleece or my coat.

Just do what I used to do when I lived on my own and never put the heating on, just sit in a chair zipped up in a mummy style sleeping bag, so long as you have some food and drink inside the bag you've cracked it till bed time. And there's more chance of getting a quilted one too.

I don't put the heating on either. I can see my breath. I most often wear my thick dressing gown, but sometimes I wear a velvet jacket I bought from a charity shop for a fancy dress thing.

I had an ex years ago who wanted one (each to their own to be honest)

I never found a new one that was affordable as theyre really expensive items.

Good luck!
