I'm pretty bilingual in miles/km and pints and litres, metres/mm/yards/feet & inches for sizes and lengths. Basically I use km for human powered activities and miles for automotive travel (except when abroad). But I can easily convert.
It's just what you are used to.
Things that make utterly no sense to me because I've never had to use them are pounds and ounces, and using feet for altitude. I just don't get feet in that context. Not that it matters as I rarely come across those, which is why they have stayed unfamiliar to me.

Scraped a pass
The twenty year old lad next door has been given a bike so I took him out for a little ride on the local lanes yesterday. He's not into sport from what I can tell and certainly doesn't do any running etc. (most of his activity is video games I reckon). When I told him how far we had gone (in miles), he asked how far was that in kilometres. This surprised me because, as far as I know and in my experience, the only denizens of these islands that want to know road distances in kilometres are those that actively follow or participate in "distance" sports or use devices such as GPS machines and apps to plan, monitor or record their activities.

Times are changing. Perhaps he plays video games where distances play a role and the metrics there are metric.
Apropos times: Once we had a guy - let's call him Broermeyer - in the company who was responsible to integrate new IT services into the central monitoring. Usually it took four weeks for one new service. So we made fun of that and when our boss asked how long a task will take, we answered: "Roughly a quarter of a Broermeyer."

How come the transition to degrees C in the UK went so quietly. Why didn't we have ninnies calling themselves thermometer martyrs protesting? And when did it happen?
I remember that our thermostat at home in the 70s was in F. 70 being warmish. So F was in widespread use back then. But at some time since then Farenheit has completely disappeared. I don't recall the last time I heard it mentioned other than by Americans. No one bothers to qualify what kind of degrees (F or C) they are talking about. And when did it happen?
