As a former Talk Talk customer whose data was hacked, Mrs B and I can tell when out telephone number has been sold on. I just tell them to f*** off.
I have mentioned this before on here, but a former colleague had a son with learning disabilities who loved talking on the 'phone. So when a scammer or cold caller rang, he would just hand the 'phone to his son. and let him enjoy himself.
