Does that mean spinach is out as well?
Some people spread the wrong message (including some nurses, and even doctors, who should know better). Warfarin works by nobbling the body's vitamin K metabolism, and green veg is blessed with lots of it, so they add 2 and 2 together but get 5!
The truth is, that it is helpful to eat a healthy diet including vitamin K. It is much easier to get stable clotting times when the diet includes a reasonable amount of vitamin K, and then adjust the medication to compensate for that. It is all there in the medical literature, but some people don't seem to keep up with it.
Consistency is the key. I try to eat similar things every week and my medication needs remain stable when I do. The potential problem with kale is that it is a real Vitamin K monster so one decent helping of that could swamp everything else that I was eating!
I have just had a good helping of rocket and I suspect that is K-rich too. Actually, it's about time I looked at the Vitamin K content of different foods again. I will check how much there is in spinach. It would be nice to have more variety in my diet. (What I eat is healthy, but it does get a bit boring being
so consistent!)
