I regularly pass by Hause Esters and Hause Lange and in 6 years I've never had the opportunity to stop and look. And I'm a fan of his buildings and that style. One day ....

And now it's decided that I'm German again.

there is, as far as I know, no Mies building in the UK. Peter Palumbo wanted to put one up at Mansion House long after the great man's death, but the planners beat him, and we have Sir James Stirling to thank for this pile of toss instead

there are two great Miesian buildings in London. Millbank Tower, formally Vickers Tower, designed by Ronald Ward

and the splendid Commercial Union designed by Gollins, Melvin and Ward, which is, by my reckoning, the craziest piece of engineering in London - the floors are hung from the top to allow the curtain wall members to be superslim

Sorry, Uncle Mort. Then again, I could have posted this

How Stirling ever got a job after his first essay in stripes I'll never know

but, yes, he is, apparently, the greatest architect of the late 20th century..

by way of contrast - this is what Palumbo had in mind for the Mansion House site. Mies' greatest building, the Seagram Tower

Mixed feelings about Mies buildings... I love his detailing and proportions on single storey floating pavilions but it loses the simplicity and looks monotonous just piled upwards.... easy fees though, just scratch out the numbers on the storey plans.

Stirling buildings have never appealed to me, the Runcorn extruded housing killed any sympathy for his stuff... I prefer Wright/ Corbusier/ Voysey/ Webb/ Lutyens.
