Tough work day Monday, lots of pressure, angst, high concentration computer based stuff for me (not my forte) 10 hour day non-stop. Bit of a headache developing during the afternoon.
Gets home sits with family for 20 mins in front of tellybox.
Goes to get my dinner and fire-up lap-top for some cc-therapy and notice after a while my vision blurring so's I couldn't see my food or read the screen properly, after a while a zig-zag sparkly pattern was accross my vision.

I had a lay down with R4 at about 8pm (always a good cure). As I dozed I could hear the words but not understand the sentences, the head banged and the vision remained sparkly. I slept all night. Head still a bit tricky in the morning, slight tunnel-vision and muzziness. went to work for the 36 hours of madness.

Now I've never had a Migrane, though there are sufferes in the family. Was that one?
Might I have another now I've had one?
Should I give-up banging my head against a brick wall?

That sounds like a migraine.

Mine are very similar but clustered. When I have one and sleep it off the changes in hormones and stuff during sleep triggers the next one so I wake up with another migraine, which I have to sleep off but the the changes in hormones and stuff during sleep triggers the next one so I wake up with another migraine, which I have to sleep off.....

This can continue for maybe four days at a time leaving me confused, befuddled, cranky and unable to sleep. However, one of the causes of migraine, for me at least, is lack of routine sleep so if I can't sleep for a few nights it can trigger a migraine, which I have to sleep off...

I am on permanent meds to stop it happening.

I occasionally get a migraine. It starts as a bad headache that feels stronger and more permanant than just a headache. My eyes feel different and ache. Bright lights and noise make it worse. I have to take painkillers and go to sleep as soon as I can. If I don't it gets worse and I end up vomiting. The worst one was at the millennium dome on a family trip. I was stressed and tired, the headache started, I had no painkillers with me and no where quiet to go to. I watched five minutes of the acrobatic show complete with flashing lights and banging music and rushed outside where I threw up everywhere.

I suffer from cluster migraines, nothing fo ages then a week or two of hell. I start with a hollow feeling in my head which I now know is the opening salvo. I cannot function at all and have to hide under the covers in a darkened and silent room. Sounds, smells, light all become unbearable and touch and taste disturbed. This comes in waves and can last for days at a time. I have been given some medication which I have to take when I feel the warning signs, it only works if I take it early enough, miss the window and its a waste of time (sumatripan succinate)

Mine have no obvious cause, but they do seem to run in the family......both my sisters, mother, grandfather(RIP) are or were all sufferers

It was listening to Radio 4 wot done it, I often hear the words but can't understand the sentences.

Tingling lips and finger tips lets me know there is another one on the way.
Meds don't seem to help. Several hours sleep in a darkened room is the only thing that gets anywhere near reducing the pain and it often leaves a dull ache for a day or two after.
Lucky enough they've become relatively rare.

You don't say how old you are, but if this has never happened before you should really mention it to your GP and get yourself checked out. IMHO

I totally agree with Porteous. This does sound like migraine but a first episode should always be checked by the GP (to exclude other causes).

Could be stress related - you don't want to go down that dark road so see the Doc.

They are the worst things ever in the world imo!

I had my first one when I was a child, my parents thought I was on drugs, I couldnt speak properly (jumbled up sentences) I couldnt see properly at all. I used to get the warning signs of tingling arms too. It was like they were not really there.

I went on sanimigran for about 10 years, when I was in the army I stopped taking them because I was worried that they would think I was not fit for duties.

I started getting them again, and again, and again so I went to see the doctor in the army who prescribed me something called Imigran if I remember correctly. This was not a preventative but a tablet to be taken when I thought I was getting a migraine.

I only ever took 1 of the tablets, I was in iraq and my vision started going funny, I began to struggle putting sentences together so I took a tablet.
I kid you not within two minutes the migraine was gone and to this day I havent had one since!

I also cut out all caffeine because I suspected that was what used to trigger mine off, oh and melted cheese lol

They are unbearable and you definately need to get to the doctors, at the very least you can be prescibed paramax which are stronger paracetamol which help somewhat.

Good luck with it, I hope that you and other sufferers never have another one again.

Thanks for the advice as always.
Very, very pressurised here at the moment workwise, so that is bound to be a contributory factor. Will get to the docs and get an opinion too.
Mother was a sufferer, triggered by shellfish of all things...

Sorry to hear this. I'm 51 and started to get them about five years ago. Riding home in the evening, up Fenchurch Street and a white orb with a sort of zig zag shape began floating in my left field of vision and I suddenly had trouble judging distance, all very odd.

Next day went to the optician, he said migraine and I left it. It happened once more months later.

Then three years ago the same thing happened but at work, trying to work, could not even write a sentence - the words were there in front of me, so was the zig zag light but I was sort of once removed from the room.

Blinding headache this time too, then a load came at once. Classic migraine symptons said the doc, and they come in clusters.

The pills I take help now and do seem to work. But I thought it strange to begin getting them at my age???

Get yourself to your GP, always best to get it checked.

I have only ever had one migrane, but it was more obviously one, due to the very classic symptoms. I was tired and a little dehydrated which is what set it off. I started to get a very sore head (to one side) and then just wanted to stay out of light. It got worse and worse (it was VERY sore) until I was sick (and I am never sick). I felt better for a while until it all started again, until I was sick again. Then it started again! This was the last time fortunately, and after being sick that last time I just felt exhausted for the next 24 hours.

I haven't had one since and I'm sure as long as I don't get that tired and dehydrated again, I should be fine.....oh wait a minute I have three kids and cycle a lot!:smile:

The zig zag light is a strange thing! I'm 47 and have never had one before, I rarely get headaches.

@ magnatom, I was also pretty dehydrated too, so I'll keep an eye on this in particular 'cos it's easy to solve!
