I’m a bit behind this year - by now I have usually done a test bake of most things we will have for Christmas. In the past this has included panettone, babka, stollen, baci di dama, ricciarelli, brutti ma buoni, macarons, Lebkuchen, panforte and, of course, mince pies.

This year will probably repeat the chocolate babka of previous years (it’s our Christmas centrepiece cake since nobody but I likes traditional Christmas cake) and the ricciarelli and Lebkuchen may make a comeback.

For mince pies I make my own pastry but use bought mincemeat. I have to also make jam tarts as, once again, mince pies aren’t universally liked.

Ah, for me it's the taste of Christmas, being part Polish. That said, there's also a sponge cake type version where the poppy seed is mixed into the cake, and the whole is flavoured and iced with lemon. It's very nice.

Christmas always comes too early but mince pies never do... grabbed my first box mid September and that'll be my staple diet until February.

If you don't want to make one, look in your local Polish / eastern European shop. Failing that, Lidl do one as part of their Christmas range, although it's labelled as a poppy seed stollen. It's plenty decent enough for a shop bought one.
