At higher speeds that is reasonable. At lower speeds I can tolerate a bit less. Allowing that much room on some roads is impossible. However leaving only inches of room would be completely unacceptable. Its one of those things that comes down to judgement. So far I haven't had many issues with close passes, long may that continue.
I find that most telly has no informative findings or conclusions, no matter the channel or its funding method.
