In my previous life I was a Centre Lathe Turner for 25 years and would like a mini lathe that would run on domestic electricity, in my shed. Any recommendations and how much would it cost? Ideally, I would prefer a multi purpose machine, milling and turning.

I was having fun on a lathe just yesterday^_^

No recommendations, but I would just suggest you trawl eBay, they appear to have some nice looking home lathes, right up to a 3 axis Cinncinnati.

I bought a little thing which uses a mains power drill to drive it. It wasn't very expensive IIRC. I never used it as FiL gave me his old bench mounted one just after. I'll be back later when I've looked up names/makes.

How small, and would it have to be new?

I've got a single phase Chester Model B multi purpose miller/driller/lathe with loads of accessories for sale if you're interested.
Not used since I moved to North Devon, as I don't have the room to set it up in my garage.
Bought new by myself in 1998.
Total cost then was around £2000 for everything. Would take £750 - collection only.

Most of the cheaper hobby lathes are all the same, just rebadged or different guards. I found using them frustrating as they do not handle the cuts you want to take if you have are used to"proper" machine tools. I ended up selling mine and just doing stuff in my lunch break, or after work.

It's just occurred to me that the OP may have been asking about metal turning/machining. I was referring to wood turning lathes.

I've now checked. The little one came from Argos and is no longer listed. The one I've used has no markings or makers name to be found. But if it is metal working you are after I'm no help at all.

Sounds like too big for my shed.
