Mini roundabouts and idiots.

On way into work this morning after climbing hill there is a mini round about. Go to the top of the hill never use cycle lane as if you are turning right can never get to correct side of road to signal right as cars never let you in. Started to go across my lights on flashing away. Car just decides to pull straight across as if there is no roundabout saw him coming down road 30 plus. Stopped in the end after me shouting at him as thought he was going to take me out.
His argument was he didnt hit me only quick action on my part that I am still here.

Winter seems to be on its away and seems to be pulling tossers back on the road commute from hell this morning.

Some drivers treat mini-roundabouts as 'right of way' junctions to cross in as direct a line to their exit as possible and get really aggressive, either that or every car stops and then none of them have the confidence to set off.

My fave semi mini roundabout moment... I was going straight on and blonde in an Audi decided that was the right time to overtake me by driving over it. And she looked aggrieved. Sheesh

Never assume someone will give way and be prepared to stop. Same as in a car

And the roundabouts themselves are a joke, often place in positions where anything bigger than a scooter can't get around without driving over other.

Years ago, a survey was done on how motorists deal with roundabouts. Only 4 out of 10 actually knew how to go round a roundabout correctly, that is correct positioning and signalling. So the bottom line is: don't trust motorists at roundabouts, use your own judgment and don't take risks.

I had one yesterday.
An elderly driver (in a huge BMW!) didn't look to his right and I was almost half way across the mini roundabout at this point.
He wasn't going fast and I had time to brake.

I had the biggest twonk ever yesterday. Driving to join a "sky ride" in st Albans I came up behind a learner. I positioned myself to overtake at a suitable point. Twonk behind tried to under take me!! I wasn't indicating & there was no right hand turn he could.have thought I was taking

Happens to me all the time! I think people (motorists) either don't look properly, seriously misjudge my approach speed so think they can cheekily nip across before me or just don't give a damn as it's only a bike/cyclist . My method of dealing with this when I see it begin to occur is to maintain my path and speed until the very last moment. I will not back down until it becomes a choice between asserting my rights or a trip in an ambulance. Usually the motorist will slam on and look sheepish or start to rant and foam at the mouth despite being entirely in the wrong!

I will just point out though that as cyclists we are very vulnerable and while I feel invincible 99% of the time, discretion is the better part of valour and all that business, it is important to remember what can happen and I direct your attention to THIS RECENT THREAD. It is no use winning the battle if you lose the war....... although MAC was not even trying to be assertive in this case it is an important reminder to be careful out there.

I don't trust them on any part of the road. It seems to me some learn to pass the driving test but never learn how to drive

To be fair, people who passed their driving test many years ago, never once looked at a Highway Code since then and are completely out of touch with new signs and traffic regulations, let alone roundabouts. I am a strong advocate of compulsory driving assessment every 10 years for all motorists, it would certainly improve safety on the roads. There is one tip I always give my pupils for roundabouts and that is to look at the front wheels of the vehicle and the driver's face as they will always be pointing to where they want to go.
