Spotted somewhere on the other side of the railway bridge in Cambridge yesterday, a shop selling geeky stuff I fancied having a look at, so I cycled down there during my lunch time today.

The railway bridge is single lane in either direction due to the major roadworks down there, and they're NARROW lanes; you physically couldn't have a car and a bike there at the same time with more than a gnats whisker of space, so cyclists using the bridge are for the most part being treated okay there, especially at peak times when there will be three or four cyclists in each direction at a time. In effect, the rate of the traffic there is the rate of the slowest cyclist. However, at lunch time, I was on my own with the cars...

A car came past too close to enter in front of me, and a taxi tried to follow him; I couldn't let him, because I'd have either been squeezed off at the kerb or hit him, it was either stop (and goodness knows what the next vehicle would have done) or keep going, so I held my ground and yelled at him to back off. He did this, and proceded to be right on my arse all the way over the bridge; I slowed on the way down the other side, because the light at the end was red and there was no hurry, and because being rear ended very slowly is better than being rear ended at speed, and, naturally, he rear ended me. Gently, no obvious harm done, but still, rear ended. His excuse? I'd slowed down. Sorry, to be accurate, he said I'd stopped. So its my fault he was driving too close...

Now I've been there before with Plod. "You were rear ended? Were you hurt? How much damage was done? So what do you want us to do about it, you're only a ******* cyclist?" is their normal response (the last thing I reported to the Police I've just lodged a complaint about, because after promising to have words with the taxi driver in a video link I posted here, said incident happening over two months ago, they have done precisely swee FA). Hence that ain't going to work. So I challenged the guy for his contact details, which weren't forthcomingt... so out came the phone camera, which obviously took a good while to warm up, and then multiple pictures... And the taxi driver is resolutely refusing to cooperate, and the cars behind are honking, etc. Basically, the guy tried to bully me off the road, and ended up being delayed and embarrassed by it.

I know, I oughtn't have inconvenienced everyone else, but seriosly, the Police just aren't going to do anything with that, so its either ignore it, or take matters into my own hands. I choose to do the latter, but to be mischievous rather than damaging.

No point. Plod won't go for assault or even inconsiderate driving, unless theres blood on the road they don't give a damn. And without eyewitnesses or video footage of the event theres no point in even posting it online. But I thought it worth sharing the event here; I'm not one to give in to bullies, its not in my nature, thought others might find the story of interest.

We have a bit of road works between Poynton and Macclesfield (Cheshire ish) that is a single lane over a railway bridge. Been there what nearly 12 months.. speed limit 20mph... always get some arse trying to get past....usually a BM driver (surprise)..but the old power along, middle of road, 'wobbling' and stuffing in some speed stops them.

I think civvies doesn't help sometimes... lycra does help once in a while !!!

Yep, this bridge here has been like this for months, this is the first nasty one I've had there. Bloke just thought that if he bullied me I might vanish into thin air and not be in his way or something. Because, presumably, sometimes when he bullies cyclists they choose to take a dangerous road position to let him past. Seemed appropriate to call his bluff.

Next time I go out for a lunchtime pootle, I'll have the helmet cam. Its sad that I'm getting to the poing now where I almost don't want to go out without it.

Cab - have you got a handy foot - plant it in the driver's door....

Naah, I'd prefer to embarass and delay the muppet rather than actually cause damage. Why escalate when you can irritate?

To be honest..on this type of situation, I'll be there in primary - only a moped might get through (just not fast enough), but the bike is in major acceleration mode at the start of the road works - i.e. I OWN THE ROAD, and I throw it about - deffo too much, but stops the ass in his BM trying to get past, and even then, I'm breaking the speed limit by some...

But that's kitted out, how you go about pushing it in civvies....?

Can't say I ride in civvies, so how do you push it, as the average motorist thinks you are a twit, but not a twit in silly gear ?

Bad luck there, Cab. I bet you put the willies up that driver when you took pictures of his car.

Which bridge? Mill Rd? Coldham's Lane? (but that one's got its own cycleway now, right?)

I had a similar rear ending the other night, what a surprise from a BMW ;).
I had decided not to bother weaving in out of cars on an approach to a small Rab as it was a cobbled street and they might have been slippery in the rain. There's a busy zebra crossing at the entry so the queue moves very slowly. After the crossing I'm at the give way line and a bus is coming from my right, so of course I give way. The bus got stuck in a jam and couldn't exit blocking most of the RAB. Unless I wanted to go round the roundabout the wrong way through a small gap barely big enough for a motorbike I'd have to wait, which I did. BMW driver decided to give me a gentle shove. Even if I hadn't been there he couldn't have went any where, plonker .

i'm not so sure I want to lose too much weight now:ohmy::ohmy: - I reckon the only reason I don't get any hassle from drivers is that I'd do more damage to their precious vehicle than they'd do to me!;):biggrin::biggrin:

Hills Road, they're doing major renovations to it for the guided bus (going under it, I think). So its two narrow lanes now, one each way.

I was also in primary, because there wasn't any way to safely overtake there and because, well, theres no point in allowing someone to overtake to get to the red lights first anyway. Its a default road position on city streets where the traffic is at least moving, IMHO. But it didn't stop him, he was sore because I hadn't been willing to stop to allow him, he was more sore that I kept my road space. So he got closer and closer, simple bullying

I was in civvies, because my commute is only short and it was a lunchtime pootle anyway. I don't particularly need to push hard in Cambridge to outpace most of the cars though.

Nice one Cab. If I got rear ended, I'd be extremely bloody minded about getting their insurance details, reporting it to the cops and writing to their insurance company.

I wouldn't expect anything from the cops, but I would want to let their insurance company know they had an accident, and I'd then suggest my rear wheel may have been damaged and I might need to claim. If it turns out it's not damaged, I can always withdraw the claim, but in the meantime they have an accident on their insurance record, and if it's a company car their company will know about it via the insurance company.
