I'm off to Darlington tomorrow to share pies. One of my pals is a vegan. So that he won't feel left out I've made a vegan pie to take up with me. It promises to be very tasty based on the tasting of the filling.

Simples.

There's the hard way using solid vegetable fats like Trex - when i can be bothered I use this method.

or

There's the easy way using Jus Roll ready rolled pastry which has no animal products in it also making it suitable for halal pies.

'Strewth! There was me thinking Jus Roll had some animal input - I'll have to check the ingredients next time I see some (not that I don't trust you - it's just that it's ... err.... so good). Trex, on the other hand........always makes me think it's the spoonerised name of a cat.

as in "Have you seen what that cooking fat's done in the kitchen?"

Ingredient list for Jus Roll Filo pastry:

Wheat flour, water, maize starch, vegetable oil, glucose syrup, salt, lemon juice, preservative (potassium sorbate) flour treatment agents (ascorbic acid, sodium metabisulphite)

I challenge you to find the animal product in the above.

I believe all Jus Roll pastry is vegan though I've only checked the shortcrust and filo. The shortcrust is good but it's not as tasty as shortcrust pastry made with lard and butter.

Thanks, Vernon. Looks good to me; I've only used their puff pastry before - normally I make my own shortcrust, with butter but no lard: a nod to vegetarianism from a piscatarian household. (Thinking about it, the idea of a fish-oil based pastry is deeply disturbing - I'll experiment this weekend.)

Someone will find a way to squeeze in some pork.

I'm happy to say that the vegan pie was well received by my vegan friend and, surprisingly, by some of the meat eaters who preferred it to the tasty pork pies conveyed from Bedale.

Tell us more about the filling, Vernon.

The filling was onion, garlic, ginger, potato, sweet potato ands peas with cumin, chilli, garam masala and coriander.

The recipe is on the BBC food web site here

I placed a lot of faith in the recipe to deliver the goods and my faith was repaid with interest. The owner of the shop, Guru, hosting the pie muncher's flash mob event rated the pie best of the bunch and considering it was up against pies scoring 8s, 9s and 10s on the Vernon pie-ometer - that's some accolade. Immodestly I also awarded it a 10.

My pie supplying activities were acknowledged by Guru's owner by giving me a generous discount on a hat and giving me a free imitation dog turd, a whoopee cushion, a set of devil horns and a satan wand.

I'm particularly fond of the hat:

Oh and for those who doubt the health giving benefits of pie, this is Beryl Guru's owner. She's the only woman I know that will eat pie for breakfast. She is seventy.
