I tried and failed to read Mein Kampf.

My struggle might have been eased if I tried to read the English translation.
. The book got loads of publicity in the Times, R4, at those book festivals etc where my cousin did readings. It’s called The Boy With The Top Knot.

But he never made any money from it.

I recall hearing about it on R4. It sounded an interesting read, particularly as it reminded me of growing-up in Exeter in the late 60s early 70s with a Sikh family at the end of the street. We played footie together and were friends in some kind of way, not close, but chatted from time to time. It never occurred to me then, how different the unbelievably white and un-cosmopolitan City of my birth might have appeared to them. I thought the book might have given some insight.
It was very well reviewed, shame he never earned much from it .... maybe I should buy a copy!
Don't worry, FF. He's doing alright money-wise, relatively speaking. He went to a State Grammar, Cambridge, FT and is now at the Times. I'm trying to keep this a general discussion, which is why I posted here and not on a site where mt family may be present. How poverty is viewed isn't a new 2013 debate anyway, obs, innit.
I'm not one for miserable anything, but sometimes it's interesting and educating to try and see life through different eyes. Misery Memoirs. like regular memoirs if well written can do this. Seeing another side of human like can help us appreciate our own good fortune, as well as understand the needs and motives of others.

A friend recently watched a film and complained that it was depressing, and didn't make him feel happier.
You'd have thought that the title being 'Les Miserables' might have been a clue...
