I read something about this once. I think it used to be pronounced without an L everywhere, because it was a French word. Then some latin obsessed spelling reformers decided to put an L in there, and some people started pronouncing the L and some didn't. Something like that. Also the thing I read referred to the word salmon. And like most of the things you read on the internet it was probably bollocks. Plus I've forgotten most of it.
