My baseless theories

Either hijacked using nefarious electronic means which it then turns out the hijackers couldn't control so it flew on until it ran out of fuel and crashed

Shot down en route to taking out the Petronas Tower in which case the truth will never come out before I turn 70.

Petronas towers in the middle of the night on a weekend, makes no sense. If you are planning a 'spectacular' then you need a high as possible death toll and video coverage of it happening.

I think at the time, the IRA just wanted to prove a point with as few casualties as possible. IIRC there was only one casualty and that was a photographer who had gone inside the cordon and was approaching the device when it exploded.
