Mobile Shops

In Enderby (where I grew up) they built a large new estate on the edge of the village and that was a mile walk to the nearest shops so a grocery van used to go round 2-3 times a week. In the centre of the village was a large Co-op that was a full department store, everything from Clothes to Appliances, TV's, Carpets, Furniture. They also did grocery deliveries by 2 lads on shop bikes, my first job when I was 12. (think Granville from 'Open All Hours')

We have a fresh fish van that parks up on a Friday outside our local M+S. Greenslades are the local ( Poole ) fish merchants, they have a shop in town but the van visits various places locally.

I thought they died out lo-o-ong before online supermarket deliveries were a thing. Certainly around here.

The increase in car ownership along with the provision of huge supermarkets killed them off. IMHO.

That will be largely correct but I remember seeing a fish van doing trade in a village near Ripon around 10 years ago.

Oh, we still get a fish van along our street every Wednesday at noon.

We started using him during covid and for a while after. Although his stuff was dearer than the supermarket it was superior quality, and since nobody was going out to restaurants at that time we looked at it as having ourselves a treat.

However, his prices have risen too much now so we're back to the supermarket.

The only mobile thing we had was the "video man". He'd come around with a large catalogue of films, you chose your films and then he went out into his car to get the tapes. It would often take 20 minutes or so, and he'd get £2.50 per video, so for us he's earn £2.50 per fortnight. He stopped coming after a while though, as I think his rural round was too time consuming

Ah yes, as kids, we heard of the 'Video Nasty' man, but we never knew of anyone who did it! 😆

I think at one time our ice cream man used to supply videos but they were the dodgy sort not suitable for family viewing.
