I have a mokka pot, but have to admit I rarely used it, the first time I did have it though, I got over excited, and made a full 12 shots of espresso to drink between the 3 of us.....at 8pm.

I couldn't get any sleep until 3am.
Anyway, I digress - my bro uses one regularly, and lives in Italy, and will soon have residency in fact I believe. He told me that you never wash a mokka pot, only swill it out with hot water.

How is that agressive and how will that affect said pot?

Have you got out of the bed the wrong side ?

General advice is just go wipe them clean. A dishwasher will damage the seal on a Bialetti. I changed to a silicone seal after mine got 'burnt' by accident. Any soap residue could make your coffee taste sheite !

From the horses mouth:-

  • No to soaps and dishwashers: after daily use, one should wash their coffee pot with running water and dry it with a clean cloth.
  • A periodic deeper sanitization is recommended for an always shiny and well-functioning Moka.
  • To avoid excessive accumulation of limescale in a coffee pot, it is ideal to use filtered or bottled water for both the preparation of coffee and the clean up process.
  • How to clean the coffee pot at home in a natural and sustainable way? With three simple ingredients: baking soda, white vinegar and lemon juice.

Just wash it. You may even want to risk not using bottled water. Come on, you can do it, straight from the tap.

This might be sacrilege, but does anyone else heat the water (in the microwave or kettle) before putting it in the chamber?

Saves time and doesn't make any appreciable different to the taste - only downside is that screwing on the top half needs care.

Yes and no. Normally yes but on a slow morning no as this is as per Bialetti's instructions.
The difference is minimal if at all though but why hurry? PS - I use a tea towel to hold the bottom section with hot water.

Absolutely no idea as I don't even know what a moka pot is and I don't really care

It's one of these...

And you'll probably be equally uninterested in the fact that the pot's design
was inspired by a washing machine.

The inventor, Alfonso Bialetti, drew his inspiration from watching his wife use a lisciveuse, a French ancestor of the modern washing machine.

This used a sealed boiler with a central tube; when heated, the boiling water created steam pressure that forced the water up through the tube to wash clothes.

Bialetti adapted this principle, replacing the soapy water and laundry with clean water and coffee grounds.
