Monitor 'out of range error' in linux

Hmm... have read through the Ubuntu forums post now, but can't get a terminal window or text interface of any kind with ctrl-alt-f1 or ctrl-alt-f2 either before, during or after the splashscreen. Maybe the situation if I was to install it would resolve this? I think I'll give installation a try. I have an old Ubuntu install that I don't mind replacing as an experiment.

Failing that, looks like my joke in the first post might not have been so far wide of the mark after all - swapping over monitors might be quicker and will at least solve it in one fell swoop.
