"It closed for a reason" is often said of old railway lines,
it's closure was protested by local people and, as with many other railway lines that were closed through the 60's and 70's you could argue it was short sighted, we've 1/3 the rail network we had back in the 1950s which is now making it difficult to handle the traffic we're trying to put on it, especially with increased running speeds to compete with motorway travel, any incidents or issues create a delay that is very hard to clear, having additional routes that can be used similar to taking the back route to avoid a closed A road would be advantageous, but the 60's and 70's closures removed much of that and we're suffering for it now. HS2 is another 'project' aiming to address these issues.
I'm not saying it should be re-opened, more explaining why it's being pondered.
