Hi

I'm just putting together a coast to coast route from Carnforth to Scarborough to be ridden in April.

I've hit a snag - after Pickering I have followed the Sustrans mapping using Moors to Sea route 4 & 5.

A couple of questions.

1.Are these suitable to be ridden on a road bike?

2. There's a bit of the route that doesn't show up as a road on Google maps, nor bikeroutetoaster. Here's the start of the road here looking on google maps-perhaps the road was being constructed when Google took their pics?..Start of the road. Here's the end of it where you can just make out a gate...End of the road

Here's my route so far....Route to Scarborough

I could use alternative routing but it will inevitably leave me on A roads for a bit which I would rather avoid if possible.

Any help appreciated.

It's not uncommon to have roads peter out. The road is not likely to be under construction nor is the gap necessarily a right of way you just might be a permissive path a bit like stretches of tow path alongside canals.

As for using a road bike on Sustrans routes. It should cope if you exercise caution and get off and push if the going is too tough.

You need to remember that Sustrans is rarely directly responsible for the condition of the routes - that is normally the responsibility of councils and landowners - Sustrans merely identify routes and signpost them.

I appreciate that, however they may know of riders who use/designed the route and IIRC they will also review routes at regular intervals to make sure they are what they are purported to be.

The start and finish of the track, you mentioned is part of the Tabular Hills Walk, although it does not show up on the maps as r.o.w. so, it must be permissible to do so, for both walkers and cyclists alike. I suppose it is track, but I can't say of the condition. But, to me, it looks like a forest ride of some kind and these are pretty well maintained, if not ridable.

'Spose it depends somewhat on how your bike is shod. I did a 65 mile run yesterday, mostly on Routes 20, 14 and 1, and surfaces varied between smooth tarmac and residual rail ballast in places but my 32c's coped well. I wouldn't like to try it on 23c's though.

I'm in the process of planning a bike tour of the Yorkshire Coast, Wolds, Dales and Moors and like the idea of using parts of the Moor to Sea route. The section, you mentioned does seem to be feasible.

The bike I have is a Dawes Kara-Kum and have the Schwalbe Marathon Cross tyres and should be suitable on that terrain. The tyres are 700x38. I would be interested on how you get on with your Coast to Coast ride, I had the idea of doing that, but couldn't get my heart on doing it.

Hi 400bhp

Might be too late for you but I came back this route from Scalby, near Scarborough to Pickering in September 2009.You will of course be going in the opposite direction.

The route from Pickering to Thornton Dale is easy enough and so is the route from there to Low Dalby. Then you hit the steep forest section. When I came along this southern bit there were forestry operations, which I ignored, or I would have got lost. The route can change depending on forestry work - so I always take a compass when I'm doing forest tracks.
You need to head for Givendale Farm which is only a couple of miles from Low Dalby. There are cycle signs but not often enough. You'll have to follow the forestry track signs. From Givendale Farm I soon joined the road initially south for a few hundred yards then took the forestry track for about a mile due east til it joined the minor road Snainton/Troutsdale. I came in on this Troutsdale Road passing by Troutsdale Lodge, Hackness, Suffield & Scalby.

I would still use this route as an alternative to the busy main road. I managed it ok on a Kona Firemountain but that's what I got it for. Road bikes would do it better if the ground was dry but in places some short stetches may never see the sun! I think someone has already said that if the track is rutted or messy dismount and push for a little while, it wouldn't be for too long.

Sorry to contact you so late on, you may be under way as I write.

All the best.

I came across a sign post for the Moor to Sea route while I was out exploring Wykeham Forest - http://thelangsett.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/backwoods.html - if you've ridden all (or part) of the network, I'd be really interested in hearing what you think. The bit I was on included the lovely view from Highwood Brow, but it also had only one sign post, which looked very much like the kind that Dick Dastardly and Mutley would tamper with to send the rest of the Wacky Racers off in the wrong direction... The route from Highdale Brow down towards Hackness was a bumpy, rutted forest track at the top end. Is it a job for knobbly tires?
