A long tale do bear with me

A few weeks ago, I needed two new tyres for my car (one had a nail in it and one had been previously repaired but was leaking air so decided to replace at same time). I ordered the tyres - identical to the stock ones - online on Tuesday from a large National chain at a cost of around £207 including various discounts (a performance car, 2 years old, Dunlop sporty rubber). I booked fitting for 9.30 on the Friday morning at the local centre as I knew I had 200 miles to drive on the Saturday and wasn't going to drive on motorways on a tyre with a nail in it!

So off I went, but lo and behold they hadn't received my tyres...so after discussion, I said they could fit the less good/non matching tyres they did have in the right size and I would come back the following week and get them replaced (I had already paid online).

I went back at 8.30 one day the following week - as agreed they would fit them immediately so I could be back home asap to start work...guess what...no flipping tyres...the ones I had ordered have been discontinued but had been sourced, were on their way from Edinburgh and were expected. After all the to'ing and fro'ing frankly I'd had enough, needed to start working, so told them the cost of the tyres they had fitted online (the reviews were actually decent) and they agreed to refund the difference of £53.80

I assumed that they would refund to my CC so when no sign of it, I called and was told a cheque was in the post for the agreed sum. OK...the cheque (for inexplicably £57odd) arrived a couple of days ago and I put it in the bank this morning

So...I get home, postie has been and guess what, there's another cheque for...yes...£53.80!

My dilemma is do I bank this second cheque...given the hassle I have been through...poor communication, a number of phone calls and a few trips to the place (ok only half a mile away)...bearing in mind this is a national chain

I can't see that happening...it is pretty inept of them, but if I were to name them, I doubt anyone would be surprised

I have to say that there'd be no dilemma for me, however carp they've been. I agree with Mr Paul, I'd tell them what's happened and ask them what they want me to do.

So more hassle to me. I could just not bank it. I am not spending any more of my time on this (I need to bank another cheque this week so even going to the bank is covered)

I probably spent 2+ hours of my time faffing around in person and on the phone, back and forth during the working day (the manager never called me when he said he would, he forgot he told me to go back at that specific time, he was never clear on whether the tyres were even available and he wasn't overly concerned that I didn't have the product I paid for

Hmmmm...my charge out rate to clients is £120 an hour...may be I should ask for more

The fact that you're asking on here would suggest that you already know the right thing to do.

They'd probably want the first one they sent you, sending back. It was a different amount.
The bloke at the fitting centre seemed to have no clue how much is was meant to be. I banked it with no anticipation of getting another!

The first cheque was a goodwill gesture. The second was your agreed balance.

Personally, I treat things as I would like to be treated myself.
