Well I guess doing the right thing and returning money is an alien concept to some, with dubious excuses to again excuse a lack of morality.
So what would you do, if having brought it to their attention, you receive more from them?

Inner tubes are £3.99, cheaper if you buy more, up to £9.99 for 5.

Get yourself 25 inner tubes from Halfords - sorted!!

For someone who earns £120.00 per hour (hmmm) you seem desperate for £53.00 something does not add up also using the excuses you have for keeping the money, just makes you sound dishonest. Asking for opinions as to what to do, then using the excuses you have again for keeping the money, makes you sound like you do not have any conviction of character, I guess if money is your main motivation in life you will always have conflicts of morality.
Money sure motivates me.

I would return their cheque with a letter explaining the situation, keeping monies that you are not entitled too is called theft and considered by the police as fraudulent, no matter how much it is sugar coated.

Why should I take the time to write...I'm not the one who cocked this up from the beginning! I cannot explain the first cheque being sent for the wrong amount with a compliments slip? I banked it with no expectation of another cheque arriving a few days later. Followed by a second cheque for the correct amount...one scenario is the first is indeed a goodwill gesture, second scenario they are unable to keep records, communicate with their accounts department or some other ineptitude has occurred. I shall see if there is further contact but I'm not spending any more time trying to understand what they have done

Halfords made £53m profit last year, I doubt they'll take the time to investigate
