I find, with such tech-wizz cars, that I will drive in a gear lower than it thinks I ought be in. And, no, I ain't wringing it out.

Turned out there was a broken umbrella on the pavement. It didn't show up in the dark. As he backed up the car detected it, had a moment of panic and slammed the brakes on full. Bam!

Weeds on the drive is another one, apparently. There's a video on twitter of some people baiting an autonomous car by sprinkling a ring of white sand/salt around it, they think it's a white line they mustn't cross, and become imprisoned by it. I'm still tempted to buy one of these.

My corrolla doesn't have a traditional auto gear box but something called CVT, it's great for pootling and cruising to get the hybrid system to kick in but if you put you foot down when you need extra power it gets confused and over revs

I think most of you lot need a Model T.

None of that new fangled nonsense for me!

Me too, within reason. I don’t like the lane keep assist, which feels like someone reaching over and tugging on the steering wheel, although I don’t mind the warning rumble if you stray over a white line. But I am happy enough with automatic lights, wipers, mirrors, main beam etc. One still needs to be aware of what they are doing and take over if required (auto lights in daytime fog for example).

Auto lights on mine are fine
but the auto headlights are terrible
If you drive along a totally dark bendy road they take quite a few seconds to decide that the full beam migth be a good idea
by that time I have done it manually and this cancels the auto function

and if you leave it on but have a reason to flash teh headlight - like if you are letting someone out at a junction - then that cancels the auto functions as well
and to switch them back on you need to flash the headlights and hold them on full beam for 5 seconds

who designed that carp???

I rather like all the new tech' in modern cars, the majority works extremely well.

Me too!
A career in tech means I’ve always had a slight tendency to being an “early adopter” 🤪
Nowadays, I have to confess, I just want stuff that works, but whilst I have a cracking 11yr old XC60 (with plenty of tech - active main beam, adaptive cruise, all great), we did move the second car to electric over 6 years ago.
Now on our second Kona EV, we love it!
Even has tiny cameras in the wing mirrors that show what’s alongside in the dash when you indicate. Sounds gimmicky yet becomes second nature to glance down after looking over shoulder before moving across 💪

The binging and bonging, on the other hand 🤦‍♂️. Luckily we can silence that with a hold of the mute button on the wheel, so not too bad….

I do think adaptive cruise control (as well as the auto city braking, etc) can be a major contribution to road safety 🤷‍♂️

I hired a car from Avis in Pisa a few years ago, and neither I nor any of the local staff could work out how to release the handbrake.

It wasn't one of that branch's regular vehicles and they had to ring the branch from which it had come in order to discover the secret.

Lefty tighty. Get it righty.
What's all this negativity re modern tech'...

...you can't beat radial ply tyres, pas, abs, electric starters, servo assisted brakes, heaters, headrests and the sheer luxury of squidgy steering wheels.

It's not a question of negativity (at least not from me) more one of culture shock.

I learned to drive in 1980. Since then, until quite recently all cars or vans I drove were the same: three pedals and a gear stick. I'd hire one on holiday and maybe it would have a novelty feature like cruise control, or automatic wipers, but basically the same. It was quite fun driving a posh car every now and again.

But within the last few years it has skyrocketed with so many new features, many of which I don't even know exist, and a computer churning out distracting messages like one of those air crash reconstructions. I now doubt my ability to drive them and feel safely in control. So that's the end of car hire for me for the time being at least.

I'm sure that when my current car does eventually disintegrate I'll get a new car and I'll learn how to drive it in my own time, and I will grow to appreciate it.

Or maybe I should just bow to the inevitable and stick to train travel.
