A small detachment of the WIMPS are planning to ride the new bay route, Barrow-in-Furness to Lancaster via Glasson Dock, first weekend of December .... anyone else done the ride and any thoughts to share..

The cafe at Glasson Dock is decent and handy, literally a few metres off the track.

Seating inside and out - I like to keep an eye on the bike even if it's locked.

Opening hours would need to be checked.

I think they draw stumps at about 3pm, and may stop serving hot meals a little earlier.

Café in Ulverston train station is also small bike shop. Take on some fuel before climbing Bigland.
We really enjoyed it. Two days with stopover in Grange. Enjoy 👍

It's a very good route. I've ridden the whole thing once from Lancaster and also from Lancaster to Grange before heading north. You'll have a great time.

Café de Lune at the end of the cycle path near Glasson is good. Not as good as it was years ago but still OK.

What is WIMPS?

WIMPS is a group / club of cyclists formed via the CTC forum. We have day rides all over the country, plus we have done the LEJOG and the CTC together .... a band of brothers and sisters, riders and non riders, who ride and socialise at meets.

I've done it from Ulverston to Lancaster. Lovely route with one memorable, seemingly never ending climb between Greenodd and Cartmell.

That's the cafe at Condor Green... Glasson Dock is close, but not the same place. It also has a cafe.

An interesting long summer day ride would be Barrow to Blackpool using the Wyre ferry to cross from Knott End to Fleetwood. The last 25 to 30 miles would be completely flat and you'd need to do it with a northerly wind to get the benefit of a push down the front to Blackpool. A big day out, I'd guess about 125 miles.

Chorley to Barrow via Bay Cycle Way
Here's the route I took back in 2015. The Bay Cycle Way itself is probably about 80-85 miles. If you are starting at Barrow, then its the first half thats got the toughest hills. I think its a fantastic route, we go up to Glasson several times each year to do the first 20-30 miles for a few hours ride. Plenty of places to stop for food all the way - Ulverston, Grange, Arnside, Morecambe, etc, etc. If you are taking 2 days then I think there is a hostel/B+B in Grange thats cycling friendly - I've not tried it but plan to use it sometime next year

I ride these places very regularly, it’s an easy ride in terms of hills. There’s only one of note. Lots of good cafes in Grange (I used to recommend Hazelwood but better to use the bakery and eat in the park as it’s gone up market), witherslack if open, Beetham post office twee but cyclist friendly, Arnside, Silverdale (wolf house or Leighton moss rspb), Carnforth (Brief encounter tea room at station), bay view garden centre, Archers farm caravan site at red bank, Truck Haven (unlikely place for cyclist but used to have massive fry ups available among the truckers), Lancaster -Atkinson’s inside the castle has just opened, cafe de lune at Conder green ok but not as good as once was, the bistro in Glasson is better or the Stork at Conder Green.
