I had to compress for space. Actually, I could go on and on about the Depression, but most of it was, according to sources, quite mundane.

One of the things largely forgotten as people gaze rosy-eyed back at The Good Old Days - the sheer grinding tedium of a rural life with not enough money.

I will tell one interesting story it took two generations to uncover. During the Depression of 1929-1939, the German Farmer's Bank had a run. It was an exceptional run, full of drama and ruin, and a bad day for all concerned, except those who got their money out first, causing the panic that spread through the Main Street and across to the county courthouse, where the sheriff called out mounted deputies and quelled the riot.My father saw this, and it had an effect on him. Some years later, after the bank had gone, and a credit union had been there some years, it was decided to make the building into an Armed Forces Recruiting Post. While they were measuring the inside of the building, they found something, and I happened along as they were measuring the outside of the building. Something didn't add up. There were several feet missing from the building's inside compared to the outside. The rear wall was tapped with a hammer, and one of the workmen said-"Void" The fellows started banging at the wall, and soon a vault door appeared. After much work, a vault full of Morgan Silver Dollars was found, from the 1890's.
These were sealed and sold off by the Credit Union. Could have saved a bank run, though, had anyone known about it.
