A bad worker always blames his tools. Unless he has no tools, in which case he's simply a bad worker.

I understand that originally the phrase had an extra layer of meaning because most craftsmen would have made their own tools, so by blaming poor tools they were criticising their own workmanship

But who's tools did they use to make their tools, I wonder 🤔

An apprentice had to start out by lapping a piece of flint and work his way up to more sophisticated tools. He'd have to smelt iron etc before making his first vernier caliper !

Joking aside, I did buy a rather lovely cased set of engineers' tools: calipers, squares, and so on, from an elderly gentleman who'd made them for his own use as an apprentice at Vickers
