If you look at the reviews for the ad-blue and diesel cleaners, you'll see they do help address issues - e.g. DPF or ad-blue light coming on, then going after a good drive with the additives in. There are lot's of pitfalls with modern 'clean' diesels with the environmental systems that you have to keep an eye on, otherwise there is a ticking time bomb of very expensive repairs. Never get a diesel unless you are doing regular long drives with it - I try not to use mine around town as it takes so long to reach full operating temperature in traffic. Petrol/EV is the answer.

I think the question of the efficacy or otherwise of fuel additives depends on what they are and their function.

They can only be assessed on a case-by-case basis, there is no blanket answer to the question "do they work?"

For example, theres cetane/octane enhancers, cat cleaners, DPF cleaners, fuel system, cleaners, fuel stabilisers, etc, amd its impossible to say as one whether they do or do not work.

With regards petrol additives, I don't use anything in MrsF's petrol car as it does get used more than my 'old' petrol used to - I'd add the additives to my petrol before a 'run'. The van is the same, it sits most of the week, and only really get's driven at weekends, but with diesel being rather 'dirty' on combustion and the soot internally, it's best looked after.

That said, my modern diesel van doesn't spew out smelly exhaust, you can't really smell anything - compare that to my neighbour's old transit !

"Is there any independent evidence that Redex products actually do anything?"

Google: "There is no strong, large-scale scientific or independent laboratory proof that Redex fuel additives deliver major long-term improvements in fuel economy (MPG) or power for healthy modern cars"

I wonder how that relates to 1. Cars only run on Premium fuel. Presumably / I’m lead to believe - those fuels also have the most and best additives included. To help clean combustion areas, increase efficiency etc.

And 2. Those run on the cheapest fuel the owners can find. Ie: ASDA etc…….
