It only takes one ... (That was a couple of miles from where I grew up.)

That's the problem. Some people are wound up pretty tight with life, stress, drugs, debts, whatever it is and don't need much to make them flip. Reading back through what I have written above perhaps I have been a bit strong and this might appear to be targeted at Lejogger but I am merely trying to point out that in 99% of the situations you find yourself in on the road there is absolutely no need to escalate the situation and make it into a confrontation where somebody has to back down because, being human and human nature being what it is, the end result can all too easily be like the tragedy Colin has linked to.

I imagine 1% of drivers would have acted as he did. 4% might have engaged in a debate but not necessarily an abusive one. 5% might have apologised. 90% would have stared straight ahead and ignored me but perhaps been more considerate in future.
Like most lads in their early - mid twenties he probably thought he was Mr Amazing and a criticism of his driving touched a nerve, but why should that stop me pointing out that he was being dangerous if I believe that doing so will make the road safer for me and others?

Its frustrating and infuriating when you meet a driver like this, so I would take steps NOT to engage, or try your very best too. its hard i know and i often dont practice what I preach, but I'm a big fella (tall and wide) and am quite happy to get stuck in if needed, let it pass and keep yourself safe.

Also I think your figures are WAY WAY out.if you engage then I suspect 80-90% will react badly and not stare ahead (especially if they drive a car with those clues strapped onto it). I am stunned when drivers act well when confronted.

To be fair, I only found out what he was like when it was too late... and when I saw which way the conversation was going I left it alone without lowering myself to his level. Apart from making the initial contact I don't think I could have done anything any better?

I can only go off my own experiences. Ive been ignored by virtually everyone I've challenged.

A tragic tale.

The sad thing is, there are people on this very forum who'd probably defend the driver's actions (see the 'leaning on cars' thread).

Have a good think about what you have just said.

I think there's a lot of difference between bravado on a forum and actually behaving in this manner towards a fellow cyclist... indeed a fellow human being.
I simply cannot believe that anyone would on here would defend this behaviour.

Sir, are you going to put me on detention if I don't Sir?

As I said, read the thread I mentioned. There are a good few 'touch my car I break your face' type posts.

Me: "That was too close mate"
Him (in finest North-End of Birkenhead accent): "I don't give a f***"
Me: "I'm just asking politely that you give me a bit more room next time".
Him: "Get that thing (pointing at the bike) off the f***ing road and on the f***ing pavement..."

If the old Blood Tub was still about he'd have a ready audience at the bar, bragging about the imaginary jabs and hooks he'd just given you (if only he was hard enough). Sounds a right c*ck.

OP's mistake was to confront the driver which could have meant that things could have got ugly, possibly very ugly indeed. A cyclist is never going to come off better in these situations however much you think you can handle it. Best avoid and move on.

I was active on the thread in it's infancy but lost interest after a couple of days... as I said, there's a difference between forum bravado when hiding behind a keyboard and actually committing murder! I'll happily use my 'all talk, no trousers' remark again in relation to certain forum users this time.

Just like I walked away from the goading motorist, I will ignore your goading comment ;)
