Animals aren't people. If a magpie flew in and nicked my jewellery, then I'd put it down to experience. If it were a human, I'd probably want justice.

People are animals.

many people believe that a licence proves they can drive, very few people these days see road craft as a skill which can always be improved and worked on. As such when you confront any motorist the majority will see you as the agressor and a critical one at that.
When confronting someone you must ask what you wish to achieve, and the fact the desire to do so usually comes after a near miss often means the discussion does not start politely but rather with tension which increases.
I personally take a deep breath, count my blessings that I will get to see my family again that day, I remind myself this tightly wound idiot who does no exercise will likely have high blood pressure and a heart attack at some point. I then do my very best to keep the hell out of the way of the poor driver.

Road Rage, Agression and Road Accidents have horrible statistics.... don't let yourself be one, it's better to swallow pride than blood imho

There are times when it is essential to tell a driver that what they are doing is wrong rather than just let them get on with it. Yesterday I felt the need to shout at a driver to tell him to look at the road and put his hands on the wheel. Prior to my intervention he was driving erratically down a busy high street, following a cyclist. After my shout he did pay some attention to his driving - he also wished me a painful death, but at least he wasn't an imminent danger anymore. This morning morning I had to shout at another driver. First to make him aware of my presence, then to tell him that he was entering a bus lane, then to tell him that he was proceeding through a no entry. I really tore into him when he attempted to get out of the situation by driving in what he thought was the left hand lane of a normal road was in fact the right hand lane of three on a one way road heading in the opposite direction. I eventually forced him to turn round.
Sometimes you do have to teach other road users a lesson. Sometimes you need to do it with some force and you need to do it immediately.

Motorist did the same to me when I gave them the finger for nearly knocking me off on around about....caught up with me and rammed into my bike knocking me off, then whilst I was getting up he smacked me in the jaw, had someone in hospistal who I was going to see, so just picked up my bike and carried on riding with my slightly un-true wheel....wish I had 'defended' myself and reported him now.

Bloody hell, that's bordering on attempted murder.

Glad you're ok.

It's just unfortunate that you had to be there the same time as that driver. Confrontation like this is so unpredictable and challenging at best. I nearly gave up cycling over 5yrs ago on my old route to work because of the abuse I have had to deal with. It got to a pont where I just thought top and bottom that commuting to work by bike is sh***. Yes, I would shout my corner and hurl abuse back but it always left a bad taste in my mouth so to speak and ruined my day at work plus dented that magical ethos of cycling. I now cycle a different route to work and ride more defensively and gesture more with my intentions if overtaking vehicles etc. I have had to adopt a stance where I don't even give an abusive person eye contact and concentrate on just getting to work. It has worked for me so far even though I have had a few close calls and shrugged them off. Let the trouble dissapear up the road out of your way.....safe cycling
