Be very careful squeezing anything into the rear which is wider than what is intended… the series 1 forks are pretty fragile. But if you replace them with the series 2 versions you have a bit more wiggle room. That raises the bottom bracket a bit but also tightens up the frame angles. I fitted a Sturmey Archer 8 speed hub (the narrow version) in one of mine. Another possibility for more gears is a Brompton BWR hub and two speed derailleur, quieter and lighter. I confess to having two original Moultons, one 1962 and one 1963.

In ‘64 my friend and I went on a camping and fishing week at Wansford. We camped in a farmers field at Nassington. All my camping equipment, food and fishing tackle for a week was loaded onto my Moulton STD which by then gained a front carrier. We cycled down the A1 from Stamford to Wansford on duel carriageway the Moulton behaved perfectly even as it was one of the first off of the production line. By the way Girls would swoon over the Moulton cycle it was quite a bird puller you couldn’t give them a crossbar home after the dance you had to walk them home.

Today I've begun a sort of half-arsed rebuild. I'm planning to build some alloy wheels around a lighter (non-dyno) hub and fit a square taper alloy chain set eventually, but for the moment I've rebuilt the headset with new bearings and am fitting drop bars and alloy Weinmann calipers in place of the truly horrible steel things that were fitted. One day, I'll strip and rebuild the rear suspension pivot, but that day is not today.

New calipers in place, nicked from my Dawes Kingpin rebuild project. I had to drill out the hole to accept an allen bolt as the thread on the caliper was too short. Just off uptown to get some bar tape.

Nearly done. My LBS shuts at 3 on a Saturday, which I didn't know, so I couldn't get bar tape. But I'll be ordering wheel rims and a new crank and BB (and maybe a Brooks saddle) from SJS before riding it anywhere. There's some play in the cotter pins and I'd like to lighten it as much as I can, so a new alloy chainset makes sense. Anyway, to my eyes it looks much better with drop bars. The steel brake calipers have been consigned to the scrap bin where they belong.

Gotta say, that was a pleasant surprise. The last cottered crank I removed fought tooth and nail before eventually succumbing. This just took a gentle tap with a copper mallet.

I haven't removed it, but I was also pleasantly surprised to discover that the suspension pivot bolts came loose without fuss and that the pivot itself is free within the frame. Everything I've read about Kirkby Miultons suggests that removing the pivot can be an absolute arse of a job.

I didn't set out to do this today. But hey ho, here we are. Rear forks off, and they appear to be in good condition with no apparent cracks.

Having specialist wheel building tools is very important. The rim is shagged and the only bit of the wheel I want is the hub.

Progress... New external bearing BB and alloy chainset fitted. All I'm waiting for now is the new spokes, then I can get the wheels built.
