Living Legend & Old Fart
Cycling gives me plenty of 'thinking time'; sometimes a line or phrase from a long forgotten song pops into my head and I spend many kilometres thinkng about it and who sang it - a good example is -
"And if your love is true,
Everything will be just as wonderful."

Today I was thinking of movie stars and who was perfect for the part so much so that any remake of it will be a poor imitation.
The winner, in my opinion is Robert Newton in Treasure Island. He did not play Long John Silver, he was Long John Silver!
Next we have "So wrong for the Role" and the winner is George Lazenby as 007; he may have been perfect for advertising chocolate but for 007...
Finally "Wrong for the role but works and works well". Margaret Rutherford as Miss Marple; Joan Hickson, who also played Miss Marple, was more like the Miss Marple that Agatha Christie invented.
So who are your three - Right, Wrong, Wrong but...?

To digress slightly, I read that not only was Joan Hickson the perfect Miss Marple, but Agatha Christie actually told her so. Although this was when Hickson was a relatively young actress, so she wasn't hugely pleased at the idea!

For mine.... Um...

Right: Not film, but TV: Edward Petherbridge as Lord Peter Wimsey in the BBC series of the 90's(?). Perfect balance of silly ass and romantic hero (unlike wotsisname* who played the part decades before, who was too much silly ass. Fine for Wooster, but not Wimsey).

Wrong: Hmmm, not sure. I'll think about it.

Wrong but ok: Nicholas Cage as Captain Corelli. Actually, he was fine, but the film was just so poor an imitation of the book I can't forgive.

Wrong: Way too many to mention but one that sticks out is Colin Farrell as Alexander the Great! Also John Wayne played Ghenghis Khan that has got to be up there too

Right: Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones...i just cant imagine the character with someone else in the role. Interestingly Tom Selleck was the first choice and Ford only got it when he turned it down.

Yes, it's very hard to imagine any different, especially Selleck.

Slightly off subject, but I had no idea until recently that Toni Basil (Oh Micky You're So Fine etc) was in Easy Rider...

Edit: spellin'

wrongwrong, wrong, just plain wrong, and in case you missed it, wrong......Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher

Reacher is 6' 5" tall (1.96m) with a 50-inch chest, and weighing between 210 and 250 pounds (100–115 kg). He has ice-blue eyes and dirty blond hair. He has very little body fat, and his muscular physique is completely natural (he reveals in Persuader, he has never been an exercise enthusiast.) He is exceptionally strong but is not a good runner.[4] Reacher's strength is combined with his savant intellect and military training, analyzing his environment and opponents at extremely high processing speeds.

I quite liked the idea of the film, but the thought of Cruise annoys me so much that I won't bother watching

what??????

Sometimes actors who are wrong for the part simply steal the show - Jeff Bridges in Heaven's Gate comes to mind.

Wrong: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in the 3rd Transformers film ( replacing Megan Fox ) OK, she may be tall, slim, good looking and Jason Statham's squeeze but she can't act for toffee.

Right: Anything with Denzel Washington or Morgan Freeman.
