Does anyone know of a decent , free (and safe) mpgeg to AVI converter? It would need to be able to convert mpeg 2 to avi.

Handbrake sounds like what you need.Hmm. [edit]Hmmmm...But they're not very complimentary about AVI - sorry!

The website for that states the output file format is MP4 and MKV, no mention of AVI.

VirtualDub apparently accepts mpeg-2 files, although personally I have never tried it, I just use it for .AVI and .MOV files.
Conversion to wmv would be fine as well. I'm having problems with importing some files from my helmet camera. I think it is a combination of large files (2Gb) and the fact that they are mpeg (WMM doesn't like mpeg much). Sometimes they import, sometimes they don't. I think I could solve this by converting the files.

Have you got the latest version?

The first screen to open up has two options, one of which is to convert a file already downloaded.

Mmm. Slight problem. When I try to convert a file, it overwrites the file, erasing he file it is about to convert, and thus fails. I can't find anywhere to change the output folder/name.

Ignore that. I'd forgot to change the output type to something different.

You've maybe already found something but I'm using Any Video Converter, it free. I also have used a trial of Prism, 10 x faster but costs $26.

I found those programs on download.com , it seems a ok database of things like that.

You know that avi is only a container format, right? What video codec do you need to convert to?

Have you tried ffmpeg, transcode, mencoder, or anything like that? They'll almost certainly do what you need, and are Free.

SUPER is a clever front end for all of those codecs\programs and some others I have never heard of.
