That's a good wee page. Much better than the leaflet she got from the hospital.

We don't assume everyone has access to the internet, and trying to get all the information on one A4 page with all the "mandatory" policies such as Caldicott, data protection, child protection, complaints procedures, ethnic and cultural diversity and of course the no smoking policy. At one point wehad over halfour leaflet taken up by this stuff. That leaves little room for the infomation thepatient really needs.

Aye, I'm your man. ;)

I work in MRI at the Sufferin' General.

All the previous advice is good. I've had just about every part of my body scanned (I know too much!).

The radiographers are brilliant and very good at putting people at ease. If your mum is coming here, she might be asked to wear some hospital blues (look like an extra out of ER) and she will go through a checklist, just to be sure she is safe to go in. Then she'll be taken into the room and laid down on the couch. Depending on the part of her body being scanned she may have a mirror that will allow her to see out.

It's noisy (she'll have earplugs) and she will be in a wee tunnel, but not totally in and they are more open these days, and she will be asked to keep as still as she can. Before she knows it, it'll be over.

I'm sure she will be fine.

I hope it goes well.

Sadly its the RAH in Paisley. ;)

Thanks for all your advice, I'm know more comfortable with the process and would gladly take her place. Although I'm not going in for the follow-up surgery

cheers

When I had my knee done (see my avatar) I felt an odd warm sensation in the knee

I don't know if it was my imagination or whether that's normal (Hopes Magnatom will enlighten me).

The worst bit was the headphones to drown out the noise were playing terrible music from a local radio station. Otherwise no problemo

Slight heating is possible. The scanner fires radiofrequency waves (RF - the same thing that radio is transmitted with) into the subject. RF comes back and is used to produce the pictures. The RF that is transmitted in, can actually heat up tissue, however, the scanners are designed to limit the effect such that your blood is more than capable of carrying away any additional heat. However, it is possible sometimes for certain people to detect a sensation of heating.

All done and all went ok. Thanks for your words of encouragement. She got a wee bit flustered near the end but the staff were really good.

Saw Magnatom's name write large on a door. That could explain the noise

thanks again.

I suppose it would make riding a bike difficult otherwise ;)

I was a bit disappointed it wasn't me getting the scan. I did a course on imaging a long time ago so I'm quite interested in the business end of the MRI.

We always need volunteers. If you are interested drop me a PM and we can probably use your head some time!;)

You can have my shoulder for free...bit far for me to Glasgow......know anyone down here who'd like to take lots of scans of my knackered shoulder.....hard enough getting it done through the official channels....

Hmm. Helmet research. I could take metal into the scanner and the subject could be wearing a helmet...;)

Coco, unfortunately my expertise is in brains only. Probably just as well.

Fossyant, Unfortunately I don't know any shoulder specialists. I know waiting lists can be a nightmare for orthapedic MRIs.
