Mrs V just texted me with....

X and Y have just had a go at work about cyclist's not paying Road Tax

I Texted back..... "Tell them no one pays road tax it doesn't go on the roads just in to general tax and its based on emmisions so neither do hybrid drivers or in fact Foreign lorries........ (2 texts)

She texted back.... "Oh no I just replied...... At least I'm not overweight, do exercise and not drive everywhere in a car......

I think she has some friends at work (or did have)

"Cyclists pay more income tax because they live longer" was a good reply I heard a while back, but Mrs Viking's was pretty well up there.

Another good one I heard and wished I'd thought of was "We don't pay fuel duty either".

this rather feeble argument doesn't even convince me, and I'm a cyclist. Technically / pedantically correct, but utterly irrelevant. similar to saying "beer tax" is actually "liquor excise duty" - so f what?

Far better to argue that bike tax is just stupid - it's a better argument, which should convince anyone who wasn't plain stupid, rather than lose before you've started by some poncy "it's not road tax" flannel..

How about "so how much extra should I have to pay for not driving my car today", or "my daughter's 3, how much should she pay to cycle in my cul-du-sac"

bike is a zero emission vehicle. very low emission vehicles "don't pay 'road tax'". end of.
